AIBS Award and Recognition Programs

Each year, AIBS honors professionals who make significant contributions to advancing biological research and education.

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2012 - 2013 Distinguished Scientist, Outstanding Service, and Education awards; see nominating instructions below.

  • Distinguished Scientist Award: (third-party nominations accepted)
    The AIBS Distinguished Scientist Award is presented annually to individuals who have made significant scientific contributions to the biological sciences. Many of this century's most eminent biological scientists have been recipients of this award including Ernst Mayr, Steven Gould, and Lynn Margulis. Nominees may advance research in any of the biological disciplines. See past recipients of this award.

  • Education Award: (third-party nominations accepted)
    The AIBS Education Award is presented annually to individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to education in the biological sciences. Nominees may work to advance biological education in formal education (K-16); informal public education programs; or professional programs that educate biologists. See past recipients of this award.

  • Outstanding Service Award (third-party nominations accepted)
    The AIBS Outstanding Service Award is presented annually in recognition of individuals' and organizations' noteworthy service to the biological sciences. Nominees may lead initiatives or dialogs that help the biology community advance in a new and exciting way, work to innovatively solve a problem facing the community, or contribute above and beyond the professional call of duty. The Nominations Deadline for the 2012 Awards is May 1, 2012.

Nomination Instructions

To nominate a candidate for any of these three awards, follow these instructions.

First, prepare a nomination packet with the following materials:

    1. A nomination letter indicating why the nominee is deserving of the award.
    2. The nominee's curriculum vitae.
    3. A brief biographical sketch of the nominee.
