2006 AIBS Salary Survey now underway, ends 28 July.

AIBS Member Society and Organizations' officers will have free access to the electronic database of salary data collected at AIBS HQ.

The American Institute of Biological Sciences is pleased to be working once more with the survey company, Abbott, Langer & Associates, Inc., to conduct an annual survey of compensation in the biological/life sciences for individuals working full-time in the United States. Additional organizations participating in this year's survey are THE SCIENTIST and the American Society for Biochemistry & Molecular Biology.

Respondents who complete the survey can enter a drawing for:

• one AppleR iPodT MP3 Player with 60GB Hard Drive for songs, pictures, and video.

• one copy of the Compensation in the Life Sciences, 6th Edition - 2006 findpay computer program, which allows you to analyze the survey data on a Windows computer for any of the survey's variables.

• four copies of the Compensation in the Life Sciences, 6th Edition - 2006 printed report.

As an additional benefit for participating in this survey, you will receive highlights from the survey findings by email.

The pooled individual membership of AIBS's member societies and organizations is nearly 250,000 biologists--together, we can generate a full and complete compilation of information across the biological sciences.

NOTE 1: The survey is not able to process information from individuals who are full-time students, unemployed, working part-time, on active duty in the Armed Forces, retired, or are working in countries other than the United States.

NOTE 2: In response to AIBS members who might ask, quite reasonably, "Why should I fill in this survey, and what's AIBS making out of this deal?" AIBS is happy to convey the following information about its arrangement with the Abbott, Langer & Associates survey company (www.abbottlanger.com):

• AIBS will co-sponsor the 2006, 2007, and 2008 surveys with ALA (renewable thereafter by mutual agreement) in exchange for one free copy of the printed report and one free copy of the electronic version of the report (ALA's "Findpay" program) each year. The electronic version will be installed on a single computer in the DC office and will be used by AIBS staff to research and generate salary reports to send to our members, publish in our journal, etc.

• Upon request and with reasonable consideration of the amount of AIBS staff time required to fulfill the request, AIBS Member Society and Organizations' officers will have free access to the electronic database of salary data collected at AIBS HQ. More detailed analyses will require AIBS to charge for staff time.

• If AIBS chooses to sell any copies of the salary report itself, the commission on sales that ALA will pay to AIBS is 30%

• AIBS will email its members twice each year to invite participation in the survey and twice subsequently to promote sales of the report and Findpay.

• AIBS will distribute flyers at its conferences and provide links on its web site.

• AIBS will run ads in its journal, BioScience
