BioChairs Program

The BioChairs Program is an exclusive benefit being developed for chairpersons or directors of collegiate programs that are members of the American Institute of Biological Sciences. BioChairs is being established to increase communication among the leadership of college and university departments, divisions and centers in the biological sciences. The program includes an electronic network for peers to share advice and information about the management and leadership issues unique to leaders of academic biological science programs. It will serve as a source for federal science and education public policy information, an archived resource that enables participants to review previous discussion topics, and a means for chairpersons and directors to share their perspectives with federal policymakers and AIBS.

Examples of Discussion Topics

  • The latest word on teaching evolution
  • Advice on recruiting and retaining students, particularly women and minorities
  • Tips for preparing for departmental review
  • Undergraduate core curriculum requirements
  • Information about model teaching programs
  • Justification of laboratory and field course requirements in a negative budget environment
  • Methods to improve informal learning for students (e.g. biology clubs and student chapters of professional societies)
  • Strategies to improve undergraduate advising
  • Successful methods to improve student, staff, and faculty recruitment and retention
  • Tips for maintaining a positive work and research environment for post-docs
  • Innovative dispute resolution techniques
