AIBS Public Policy/Affairs Associate

The American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit scientific association with individual and organizational members, seeks a Public Policy/Affairs Associate to join its energetic Public Policy Office in downtown Washington, DC. The Associate will report directly to the Director of Public Policy and work to develop and help advance science policy and media relations initiatives. Responsibilities include working on legislative and regulatory policy issues, developing and maintaining communications and media relations programs, writing press releases, writing policy analyses for online and print publications, making public presentations, and representing AIBS in a variety of settings. Travel and occasional work on evenings, weekends, or holidays is required.
Duties:
- Represent AIBS and its members in the public policy arena to promote the use of scientific information in decisions pertaining to scientific research, education, and applications;
- Monitor and report on policy developments in Washington, DC. Draft public policy statements, background papers, press releases, white papers, reports to the membership, and other materials;
- Cultivate and maintain working relationships with members of the science policy, media, and scientific communities;
- Work collaboratively with AIBS staff, members, and others on public policy/affairs items;
- Conduct outreach initiatives for members, including workshops and other training sessions.
Minimum Requirements:
- Excellent and demonstrable written and oral communication skills;
- Excellent and demonstrable science policy analysis skills;
- Understanding and appreciation of the scientific community, the nature of science, and the goals and objectives of a professional, membership organization such as AIBS;
- Reliability, attention to detail, and the ability to work under strict time constraints;
- Ability to self-direct, think creatively, and anticipate work needs as part of a team of public policy professionals;
- Ability to synthesize and accurately communicate complex concepts to varied audiences;
- Common sense and good judgment;
- Strong interpersonal skills and a sense of humor;
- A Bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences, science policy, or a closely related field. A graduate degree is highly desirable.
- Prior work experience in public policy/affairs is highly desirable.
Compensation and Benefits:
This is a full-time position in Washington, DC. Salary is commensurate with experience. AIBS offers a competitive benefits package that includes a retirement plan, health and disability insurance, paid annual and sick leave, and paid holidays.

The Scientific Peer Advisory and Review Services department of the American Institute of Biological Sciences seeks dedicated scientific assistant to support Senior Scientific program management staff in providing various scientific peer review and advisory services to the US Government and other clients. Degree in a biology, chemistry, physics, medical discipline or appropriate experience assisting with research projects required. Excellent database and communication skills are required. Attention to detail a priority. The Scientific Assistant will assist in managing annual peer review competition processes for research projects in the areas of assigned responsibility for cyclical competition programs, and research programs. Individual will coordinate proposal receipt and processing, data entry, liaise with staff to develop project material, and assist in post review activities, including, but not limited to: synthesizing scientific comments into summary statements, copy editing, and document archiving. The Scientific Peer Advisory and Review Services department of the American Institute of Biological Sciences has positions available that involve working with a team to provide scientific services to the US government and other clients.
The Project Coordinator position requires an advanced degree, preferably in a biomedical discipline, coupled with 1-2 years of experience in project management or writing and/or editing scientific documents or proposals. Writing/editing proficiency is highly desired. Excellent interpersonal skills and organizational skills, ability to effectively multitask and adhere to deadlines, as well as knowledge of biological and biomedical terminology, are all essential for the position. Experience working with databases, Web-based applications, and MS Office is also required.

Contract Technical Editor

The Scientific Peer Review services division of the American Institute of Biological Sciences seeks a Contract Technical Editor. Applicants should have a degree in English, Life Sciences, or Medicine, or related experience. Qualities desired in the candidate include: a strong grasp of English grammar and spelling; technical editing experience; ability to research new topics and learn quickly; and ability to analyze the target audience to produce clear, concise, edited documents (with rewrites as necessary). The candidate must have very good computer skills, with the ability to upload and download documents from online Web sites. Experience with major style guides, esp. AMA, is a plus. The chosen candidate will be required to meet demanding deadlines, consistently. Further, the chosen candidate must exercise discretion when working with confidential information.
