• Dr. Jane Lubchenco will step down as administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in February after serving for four years. She plans to return to Oregon to continue her academic career in marine ecology. Lubchenco was the first woman to lead the agency.

  • The federal government has launched an effort to study the environmental and public health effects of nanomaterials. The collaborative effort will identify and characterize nanomaterials and examine how nanomaterials interact with the human body and ecosystems. The Environmental Protection Agency and Consumer Product Safety Commission will work together on the initiative.
