Introduced on 7 August 2006 by Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano (D), chairperson of the National Governors Association (NGA), Innovation America is NGA's initiative to uphold the United States' competitive advantage in science and technology. The initiative will work toward strengthening student proficiency in science and math. To accomplish this, NGA will seek to improve teacher proficiency and other strategies that improve science and math instruction. NGA's initiative seeks to drive innovation in the US by reducing obstacles to innovation and supporting free enterprise, funding research and promoting advanced university systems. Governors also have agreed to work across state borders to accomplish these goals. For more information:
