- The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has established a new working group to evaluate the future of the biomedical research workforce. The group will consider the appropriate size of the workforce, training opportunities, and other workforce issues, and will gather input from the extramural research community. The group's recommendations will be presented to the Advisory Committee to the Director. The working group is co-chaired by Dr. Shirley Tilghman, the president of Princeton University, and Dr. Sally Rockey, NIH deputy director for extramural research.
- Public lands play a critical role in the conservation of North American birds, according to the "State of the Birds" report. More than 300 species of birds have more than half of their U.S. distribution on public lands and waters. The report is the first national assessment of the distribution of birds on public lands.
