AIBS Board Member Gabriela Chavarria to Serve as Next Burke Museum Executive Director

The Burke Museum at the University of Washington in Seattle has announced that AIBS Board Member Dr. Gabriela Chavarria will serve as its next Executive Director.

Dr. Chavarria, a bee specialist with over 20 years of experience, has conducted research in more than 30 countries. She currently serves as the Vice President and Chief Curator of the Science Division at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, where she oversees scientific collections and scientific research, as well as leads a team of 44 staff members, interns, and volunteers. Her new appointment will begin March 1, 2022.

Dr. Chavarria has served on the AIBS Board since 2019 and co-chairs the AIBS Diversity Committee. She serves on several other boards and advisory councils, including the National Parks Conservation Association, Defenders of Wildlife, The Nature Conservancy of Colorado, and the Doris Duke Conservation Scholars at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

The AIBS staff and Board of Directors congratulate Dr. Chavarria on this new appointment.
